History

The Ministry of Public Health's regulation on the organization of the Department of Health was published in the Royal Gazette on October 9, 2002. This regulation established the "Community Sanitation and Health Impact Assessment Division" with the mission to serve as a leading agency in producing and developing knowledge, technology, models, guidelines, and standards in community sanitation and health impact assessment. Additionally, it aimed to enhance the capacity of network partners in promoting health.

Subsequently, the regulation on the organization of the Ministry of Public Health, announced in the Royal Gazette on December 28, 2009, renamed the "Community Sanitation and Health Impact Assessment Division" to the "Health Impact Assessment Division."

Since its establishment, the Health Impact Assessment Division (HIA) has focused on integrating health considerations into development planning and environmental health management. Over the years, our division has evolved, expanding its scope to address emerging health and environmental challenges in Thailand.

Our Progress

2002: The division was established, focusing on sanitation and health impact assessments as its core responsibilities.

2003–2006: Efforts concentrated on building foundational knowledge about HIA within the Department of Health, with projects addressing sanitation and local public health issues.

2007–2011: The division underwent significant structural changes, with HIA being integrated into national laws, such as the National Health Act. Environmental health indicators were developed, and HIA was expanded to address non-health sectors, including climate change and surveillance systems.

2012–2015: The focus shifted toward developing best practices, accreditation standards, and expanding HIA applications across local governments. Strategic initiatives addressed climate change, environmental health databases, and community-level impacts.

2016–2023: Over the years, the HIA Division has expanded its work to include: Developing innovative HIA tools for diverse sectors, strengthening environmental health surveillance in health risk areas, and conducting research and addressing the public health impacts of air pollution, climate change, and modern hazards in Thailand.

Looking Ahead

Today, the HIA Division continues its work with a clear mission: to advance health impact assessment, environmental health surveillance, and climate change-related health strategies tailored to Thailand's context. We are committed to promoting sustainable development and safeguarding public health for the well-being of all communities.
